Moving the Free Line - continued

Well today I want to follow-up on my post of yesterday. First of all, for all the dads out there, I hope you had a great time! I have a son and I know I did :-)

So what´s this “moving the free line” thing? Well let’s say you’re openning a pizza joint. Since you want people that you make the best pizza around, you offer them a free slice so they can get a taste of your product for free. Then there are two options -kinda obvious-:

1) They like it.

2) They don’t like it.

So…

1) If they like it… great! You have a new customer, someone who’ll buy pizza from you, and probably tell his friends or invite them to your joint. Ah the power of word-of-mouth, free advertisement at it’s best :-)

2) If they don’t like it… ask them why! Then improve what’s wrong and invite them for another free slide after the improvements. You’re showing them you care.

Some months ago, a friend of mine opened a bar. All of my friends checked it out, and it’s really cool. But we were very curious about how it would turn out because the local he rented for the bar, well, it’s as it was damned! Few businesses that rented the place survived. It’s weird because it has great location, ample space, well it’s a great place.

My friend makes great pizza. I mean it. I’m a pizza lover and have been since I can remember so I know what good pizza is. So, a bar that sells pizza. At first, I don’t remember more than two or three people buying more than a slice in the whole night -he opens early and closes 3 a. m.-, but he still had the bar to make up for it.

So one Sunday we go to the bar and read a sign “Sundays -free pizza-. He brings the free pizza, everyone eats and everyone loves it! So we go and ask him if he has a special price for the second slice and he replies: “No. Today all the pizza is free“. Wow! And he kept doing it ever since! On Sundays he refuses to sell pizza, you get it for free. Then what happened? When it’s not Sunday, everyone buys pizza!  

He has a product that he’s confident in and people might like, he let´s people know -in this case taste- the product for free, and he gives you one of the best guarantees out there… you don’t pay a dime for it!

Now he has plenty of customers, but not any kind of customers, loyal customers! Customers that love his product, buy it, and recommend it to their friends! But that’s nothing new, it’s actually one of the oldest practices in marketing.

I remember recently receiving an e-mail from an Internet Marketer I respect about this subject. He sent me a link to a video where he said he “discussed” his thoughts about the free line: I was rather dissappointed that his “thoughts” -I expected something deeper- were basically that “moving the free line” was only about getting your e-mail address and that it was b.s.

Well if you’ve read my last post and read this one this far, I guess it’s clear that I dissagree. First of all, every Internet Marketer wants your e-mail address, not just “free line movers”. A lot of Internet Marketers have great newsletters that actually offer great content but everyone, sooner or later, will try to pitch you a product. In fact, this marketer’s video was actually a sales pitch for his product so yes, I was very dissapointed.

Internet Marketing is filled with free products that marketers give away to establish a relationship with a customer, but “moving the free line” as it’s been used lately refers to products given away of such quality that was never seen before. I never thought I would get my hands on the Butterfly Marketing Manuscript for free! That promotion is over by the way.

There’s also an interesting psychological part to it… if x marketer’s product is sooo good, why does he give it away for free? In the end, it isn’t about showing you the quality of the product itself for itself, it’s to impress upon you -love this frase, thanks to Mike Filsaime for it!- the kind of quality you can expect from his products. In other words, he wants you to psychologically associate quality with his products.

That’s a direct link by the way. Why? Because It seems people have had problems with Keith’s products, and I don’t know his previous products that well to make an informed opinion. I know some, used some and liked them, but not as much as to have a well-informed opinion. You can always google him and the product -I recommend the use of quotations to get more exact results- and see what you can find. That, in fact, is a very healthy thing to do before buying anything online.

Michael Rasmussen’s MiniSite Secrets Exposed is a free membership site that I actually joined today, bacause I’ve joined other of his free membership sites-it’s not that I’m cheap, but who doesn’t like free?! :-) -  and I’ve always liked them. Now I wouldn’t say it’s quite a “free line mover” but it’s certainly worth to check out. Here’s the link:
